Silent Retreat in Olango, Cebu (November 9-10, 2019)

Picture

Pushing our boat further in Olango!

Last November 9 and 10, members of the Verbum Dei Family of Cebu facilitated a silent retreat with the students of Nemesio-Epifania Taneo Memorial High School in Tingo, Olango Island, Cebu. This was the first retreat in the island, in partnership with their Campus Ministry, which we have been working with since February of this year.

Tweny-seven young retreatants from Olango, and three from Cebu City joined us for the two days, where we had four guidelines, longer times of silent prayer with the Word of God, creative/working prayer, shared meals and snacks, and afternoon icebreakers. It was beautiful seeing these young people discover Jesus so alive in the Word of God, and writing their prayers. At the end of the two days, where we deepened on Luke 5:1-11, we gave the retreatants a necklace with the cross, as a symbol of their newfound friendship with Jesus who is our greatest friend.

One of the young retreatants, Rgeane, shares her experience of the retreat:

"Sometimes in life, we feel an emptiness within us. We feel that we are alone in the four corners of the room engulfed by total darkness, but the truth is we're not. Our boat is full that is why God can't enter. Our life is more focused on earthly things that is why we can't entertain Him. ‘He allows us to feel our downs so that we can have a space for Him.’ He allows every obstacle for us to learn that he is just on our side, even if we don't notice his existence, and even if we are not willing to be his minister.

Have you gone in front of the mirror and asked yourself, "Who am I?" No one can tell us who we are. Our circle of friends, teachers, family, social media accounts, and even ourselves can't. There is only one person who knows us beyond what we know of ourselves. It is God, only God. We can talk to him without any hesitation. We can talk to him without any doubt that he might judge us. Talking to him is just like having a long, heart-to-heart conversation with an old yet unforgettable friend. ‘The more you know God, the more you know yourself.’ With him we are more than real and more capable to do things.

We think that every day is a normal day. We wake up, go to school or work, eat and sleep. ‘We don't recognize that the small things are miracles or a blessings in disguise. Being able to see the beauty of the world, to breathe, to talk and listen is a miracle.’ It's a chance that is given to us. We should appreciate the value of small things because not all of us have the opportunity to always recognize that value.

I am not an expert singer but I will sing about his greatness. I am not a good dancer but I will dance just to show to the world that he is flexible enough to cater to a lot of people, good or bad. I am not a talented person but I can shine because I have my light - God! I made and will make mistakes but now I am with God. I'm not so fully equipped with wisdom, knowledge, and experience to defend him, but I can be a living testament that he is not dead; he is surely alive and he is writing my story. I am a stone in the shore, not that important and precious, but God offers his hand to lift me. I am a solitary bird on a flight to nowhere but now I am home because I am with him. I was once lost but now I am found."

Baptized & Sent: Missionary Journey in Olango, Cebu (October 20, 2019)

Baptized and Sent
Missionary Journey in Olango, Cebu

The whole Catholic Church celebrated the extraordinary World Mission Sunday last October 20, 2019 with the theme: “Baptized and Sent”. Thus, as one Verbum Dei community in Cebu, we decided to have missionary journeys in the different places where God called us to go through giving recollections. Disciples from different walks of life were sent to Toledo, Boljoon, Olango and Bohol.

Now, I am beyond grateful to share with you our missionary journey experience in the island of Cebu, Olango. There were about 18 disciples who volunteered to help and organize the recollection in two different barangays: Brgy. Sta. Rosa and Brgy. Tingo. The same flow of activities was done in both places with an estimated number of 120 participants - teens, lay people, catechists, and parents. The activities included singing songs, dancing animation, games, giving of talks, listening to testimonies and sharing of the fruits of the recollection.

The first talk was God the Father, which was given by one of our new missionary couples here in Cebu, Eryle Payos, and followed by an inspiring testimony by my husband, Manuel Manceli. The talk was indeed an eye opener for everyone and I myself was even reminded about my real identity as a child of God. It taught us that the unconditional love of the father is such that no matter how sinful I am, God still loves me. The passage that struck me was in Genesis 1:26 where God said that He created us in His own image and likeness, that even when I was still in my mother’s womb, he already knew me. This talk made me realize that God created me for a great purpose and through the virtue of baptism, I am sealed to be with Him forever. In addition, the testimony given by Manuel concretized the powerful and living love of God to his children. He shared how Christ changed his life and how he was accompanied throughout his sufferings. Manuel's experience showed that no matter how hard you work for your dreams, if God is not in it, it would still be unsatisfying.

I gave the second talk about Mission – how we, as children of God, can live out our purpose and goal in life as baptized and sent disciples of Christ. Being the person who gave the talk, I was the first one who was blessed to receive the fruit! I realized that my life is a gift from God, and I was “baptized” and “sent” by God. My life is for mission, not just any kind of mission but the same mission that Christ has lived – to bring God to the very lives of the people. Being a missionary is not only for religious people, priests, nuns and missionaries, but all of us, we are a missionary. The talk rekindled in the listeners once again the urgency to respond to the call of God to give life to others.

The recollection was very memorable and successful. Seeing the joy in the faces of the participants and hearing their thoughts as they shared their fruits were beyond worth, despite the strenuous preparations and activities that we’ve been through. Everyone experienced God’s love and were eager to do the mission God has entrusted to us. As Pope Francis reminded us that “I am a Mission and You are a Mission ALWAYS”.

Verbum Dei Singles Outreach Program in Tingo, Olango (May 19, 2019)

Reaching Out Beyond Comfort Zones

Verbum Dei Singles Outreach Program in Tingo, Olango – May 19, 2019
Every year, VD Singles Reality in Cebu goes to the nearby island of Olango to give school supplies to the poor children who attended the Flores de Mayo. It is a real community activity, possible with the collaboration of many members of our Singles Reality, some of whom help in the fundraising, others in the buying and packing and finally some others join the distribution of the school supplies to 120 children. Of course, as Verbum Dei disciples, we could not give only the material supplies, but we also gave some short faith input, reflection and dynamic to the kids. This year, 16 of us volunteered to go to Olango to distribute the school supplies and give some merienda snack.

Below is the experience of Elvie de Guzman who joined the VD Outreach program for the first time.
" Verbum Dei got out of their comfortable, safe Sunday and reached out to the Tingo Flores De Mayo kids. I am embarrassed to say I did not do much except to tag along, carry some bags of bread and join in with the team. To see the VD disciples carry such big and heavy boxes, witness Arman and Bethel reach out to and be responded in equal and sometimes more enthusiastic measure by the children, to see the rest of the VD disciples joining in, working hand in hand, then to be welcomed by our VD disciple originally from Tingo - Olango, be invited along with her to a fiesta lunch (yummy), all in 36 degrees centigrade, sweltering humid weather (heavens bless Ann for her umbrella!).

Although I am new to Verbum Dei, I felt privileged to have witnessed Jesus in action through this Outreach Program. It was Jesus in each one who painstakingly sorted out all those school supplies, donated, bought and distributed the food. It was Jesus who lifted and carried those big heavy boxes across the boat’s narrow gangplank; Jesus who made time to sing, dance, play and show the Father’s love... Jesus who patiently found a way to include a baby VD member (me!), who upon seeing all the plastic garbage floating in the sea between Mactan island and Olango asked herself, “is mankind even worth saving?” and found the answer in a smiling child’s eyes while singing the faith song and shaking this little boy’s hand – I witnessed and enjoyed seeing Jesus in action!”
