Read and be inspired by a reflection based on today's Gospel made by members of the Verbum Dei Family in Manila.

Gospel : John 6:41-51
“Whoever eats this bread will live forever”
God draws us towards him because he loves us. He reaches out to us through Jesus . We are continuously chased and invited to have this intimacy with God. We are invited daily to the Eucharistic table . Have you recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread ? Let us welcome and receive him openly in our life. By his grace, we have already received the gift of eternal life! How wonderful it is to bask in the love of God!

Gospel : Matthew 17:14-20
“Nothing will be impossible for you”
“Lord, have mercy on us ! We come before you with the following prayer petition..” the long list goes on . Each day, individually and as a community we bring someone to Jesus, fervently asking for his intervention. Sometimes we get upset when we think our prayer is not answered. And we want to know why . “Because of your little faith”
Jesus always looked for faith in us. We need to have faith and trust in God and this can happen if we spend more time in prayer. Let us pray persistently to grow our “mustard seed” faith , believing that nothing will be impossible with God .

Gospel : Mark 9:2-10
“And he was transfigured before them”
Today is the feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord . Peter, James and John followed Jesus , went up to the mountain to pray . Up there they saw his glory and heard the voice from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved son!
Prayer transforms us. A listening heart is a heart touched through an authentic encounter of God. An encounter is both a dialogue and listening . But better if we spend the moment listening to God and allowing him to speak to us. Prayer can feel like going up the “mountain”, needing effort to get in the moment. But if you choose to make it your daily option and priority, it changes your outlook and disposition in this new normal.
Jesus, teach us how to pray! Amen!

Gospel : Matthew 16:13-23
“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven”
They “key” to heaven are the words of Christ. Peter and the disciples were given the commission to continue Christ’s work on earth in preaching the gospel . To draw men and women to Christ. For it is the will of God for us all.
God uses us to help others find their way to Christ. The kingdom’s door is wide open to those who believe . As a disciple of Christ , we are to teach them to observe all things as Christ has commanded . The church on earth will require only what heaven requires . Thus fulfilling God’s eternal plan for mankind.

Gospel : Matthew 15:21-28
Memorial of Saint John Vianney
“O woman, great is your faith”
We are rejoicing in victory for our country’s first Olympic gold . Hidilyn expressed with utmost gratitude- “Grabe si God!” Long years of hard work, focus, perseverance to achieve a certain level of readiness . Yet. together with her friends, they prayed unceasingly . Like the woman who came out shouting at Jesus , “have mercy on me Lord”, “help me”! Then Jesus answered, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”
Let us be persistent in our prayers and not let any distractions lose our focus . Continue knocking on heavens door. Trust that Jesus answers our prayer for our best . Amen!
August 3, 2021 Tuesday
Gospel : Matthew 14:22-36
“As many as touched it were healed”
“Lord save us!” Another virus variant? Cases of C19 increasing! Typhoon interrupted the vaccinations sites and blocked some swab testing centers . Another lockdown forthcoming ? A morning shake from earthquake! The “stormy weather” is not stopping at all! Yet Jesus said , “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
How are you in your present struggles? If we let our eyes drift from Jesus , fear takes over. Be comforted for God is with us. When we come to him and hang on with his word, we will surely overcome. Let us pray that God increases our faith ! God we believe that this too shall pass. Amen!

Gospel : Matthew 14:13-21
“Five loaves and two fish are all we have here”
“Taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves and the disciples gave them to the crowd.” This miracle continues to happen even to this day . Every time we hear mass we encounter Jesus in the Eucharist before us . We receive and are filled just like the five thousand men! The Eucharist is an expression of God’s love, reaching out to us. Indeed, God is near to those who come to him and his gift is abundant!
We stand in awe of you Jesus! Your generosity cannot be outdone! Our security and protection at all times! Amen!
